The past week has* not been a very good time to do much soil and water conservation work on farms but it was an excellent time to see the good that soil and water -conservation work can do on farms. The recent rainy period took its toll on many farms in th*e loss of valuable topsoil' and fertility. With the soil completely saturated with watr as it was the first of this week, all of the rainfall runs off, carrying with it a lot of good Culpeper and Rappahannock dollars..
We have taken the opportunity to “srudy sevefaT farms that are carrying out good conservation plans. Without Exception the run-off water was leaving these farms in an almost clear condition. This was not found to be .ixueon-farms-studied^ihatwefehdr" practicing conservation farming. The small streams flowing from these farms were muddy with soil washed from sloping, plowed, crop fields.
What does all this mean ? A muddy stream means that someone is losing his soil, his fertility and his farm. Wc should remember that when we plow, disk and operate tillage implements up and down slopes, that we are reducing the size of our farms. A farm has three dimensions.
