Like the construction of the old building, they may not have emphasized the fanciness of appearances, but they fought tooth-and-toenail to try and pound some everyday learning into your head. They believed in memorizing such things as the multiplication tables and rules for the use of the comma. They seemed to work on the general principle that they would teach you to read, write, and cipher and it was up to you to get your education after they finished with the schooling.
