On Forest Fires vs Hunting
Season
The lifting of the ban on hunting brought the following solemn warn: ing from I. T. Quinn, executive dirS ector of the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries.
“While the ban which was put on the opening of the hunting season by the Commission has been lifted, let us hope it has served as a warning to every outdoorsman in Virginia that carelessness with fire and hunt* ing privileges do not go hand in hand. But for the recent rains there would be no hunting season in Virginia for weeks to come, denying a half million gunners the privileges of going into the fields and forests in pursuit of the sport which they hold dear.
“Fires have not only destroyed thousands of acres of forest growth, but they have destroyed the food and cover of our wildlife, as well as : much game. It has affected directly or indirectly all forms of wildlife in those burned woods and fields, as well as adversely affecting the surrounding lands and waters. This burning of the watersheds may well bring erosion, and the soil will wash into the streams, killing fish and their spawn.
Th^ hunters and fishermen of Virginia have a deep obligation when they go into the great outdoors. They are pledged to Keep Virginia Green."
