Mice are making inroads on Virginia orchards now, and severe loses on young trees,from girdling may result unless the pests are killed.

Cleaning grass away from the trunks is helpful, but is not a safe substitute for poisoning where there are many mice. Effective materials on apple cubes or on chufas. for mouse control are zinc phosphide To use the poison, cut ripe firm apples into one-inch cubes. Mice run over small cubes. Peeling and coring is not necessary. Place one quart of cubes in enamel pan. Sift a level teaspoonful of zinc phosphide powder over the cut apples. Shake pieces of apples around in pan until they are coated uniformly. Mix fresh bait each day.
