According to a gentleman in the county, those foggy, rainy days were nearly the death of him. His wife caught him, with the reasoning that he couldn’t accomplish anything in his farming, and it was time to get all those chores done around the house. There were storm windows to be put up, screen doors to be taken down; packages to be taken to the attic or to the cellar; putting away this, getting out that, and fixing somthing or other.
The gentleman spoke with a soft sigh of hearing his father say that on a rainy day he and the men on the farm always sat around the barn and mended harness. What with tractors, and other modem helps, the old-time rainy day of sitting around and talking while harness mending, or other such chores, is past history. That was a restful day—but woe betide the modern farmer. The madam catches him for household chores, and this one fellow didn’t find it exactly to his liking!
