He attended the Baptist college of Georgetown, Ky., two years and then transferred to Franklin college of Franklin, Indiana, also a Baptist school, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, receiving his Bachelor of Divinity degree from this institution in May 1848.
