With the approaching end of the year, the realization comes again that old age is creeping up on us. It seems I’ve hardly become accustomed to writing 1952 before I must start in on 1953.
What with rheumatism, and a few other signs that mark the passage of many years, we would have cause to be unhappy—but there’s too much to enjoy and too much to do to allow time for worry about the years.
The future looks bright. Take, as a shining example, the story of a five-year-old in the county. Yes, sir, Rappahannock has the makings of a fine business man in that youngster. The other day, the five-year-old lad informed granddaddy that there was no feed for his two pigs and slop on hand was insufficient. “I'll tell you what, Granddaddy,” said the young business manager, “you buy the feed with your own money and don't take it out of my bank. I'll give you one of the pigs.”
The arrangement was made. The rest of the day the boy was unusually quiet and showed preoccupation. Granddaddy recognized the signs of a young mind at work. After a while the plans came out
“111 give you one of the pigs, Granddaddy,” spoke up the young genius, “but I've decided that when they are big and are sold, I’ll keep the money for both of them.” Granddaddy has a sneaking suspicion that he came out at the bad end of the bargain.
