County Co-ops Begin
Full Fall Apple Season
Under a new name, the Washington Co-op. at Fiat Woods will begin its fall apple season along with the other packing and processing plants in the county. By changing the word “fruit” to “apple,” the Washington Apple Growers Co-op., Inc., is operating almost exactly as it did prior to the re-organization. E. M. Jones. C. E. Johnson, Jr., and L. J. Kilby are on the job as in previous apple seasons, with Mrs. Wallace Critzer joining the office force as bookkeeper.
The storage plant and packing house at Sperryviile, (Rappahannock Fruit Growers Co-op., Inc., and Rappahannock Cold Storage Co-op., Inc.) while the juice plant (Blue Ridge Fruit Growers Coop., Inc.) expects to start the apple-juice canning by next week.
The first fruit brought in is expected to be Bonum and Red Delicious, with Grimes, Delicious, York, Golden Delicious, Staymen, old-time Winesap, and Pippin following.
dry weather is said to have reduced the size of apples but added to the sugar content; so they will be smaller and sweeter.
J. Rodes Brown Jr. is in Charlottesville to attend a bankers’ convention this week. Mrs. Mildred Thornton is staying with Mrs'. Brown and Susan this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Nichols, Mr. and Mrs. Golladay, Miss Louise Schwartz spent Sunday picnicing on the Skyline Drive.
