Professor Teske and I were rather encouraged over conditions found in orchards visited last Friday; leaf roller mite, worms, and scab seemed to be under control with but few exceptions. One orchard was pretty badly infested with small worms, I found it took a trained eye to see them and another had live scab on the foliage but none on the fruit.
Mr. Teske suggested the addition of a 2-4-100 bordeaux added to the stop drop spray when applied with convention type sprayers for scab, add 1 pound parathon where worms are found.
Stop drop recommendations are as follows: «] i .j
For Golden Delicious: 245 TP: 10 parts per million applied week to ten days before starting to pick.
For Red Delicious: 245 T P @ 15 PP M applied now to old fashioned Reds, last week to the red spots. Get the fruit off in a 30 day period.
For Stayman: Rome, Black Twig, and Winesjl^; 245 T P at 20 ppm applied Sept. 10-15th. Will hold fruit on for 45 days if foliage is good.
For Yorks: 245 T P at 30 p p m applied 10th - 15th. If Yorks and Stayman are mixed use 20 p. p. m.
Mr. Teske urged growers with packable fruit not to forget the fresh fruit trade. Keep this market open if price received is comparable to that of top canner price. He felt this would have to be around $3 per bu.
B. M. Varner Wins
Trip To Bermuda
An all expense trip to Bermuda was the prize awarded to B. M. Varner for his entrance in the General Electric Seventy-fifth Anniversary Contest. The contest lasting from May through July 31 was based on a sales quota. Four groups were set up according to districts, etc., with five prizes offered in each group.
An excerpt from the letter received August 19 notifying Mr. Varner of his winning states: “We wish to congratulate you on your fine performance in the General Electric Seventy fifth Anniversary contest that has won you an all expense trip’ to' Bermuda.”
The Varners leave for the dreamedof-land, Bermuda, October 3, while all the other Rappahannock citizens tear out coupons, Compose jingles and send in entries in attempts to match his accomplishment.
