Mrs. Polly Hirst

Mrs. Polly Hirst, wife of Randall Hirst, of Washington, D. C\, native of Castleton, died Saturday afternoon at Emergency Hospital, after an illness of two years.

Mrs. Hirst, 39, was the daughter of the late William Grady Heyle and Mrs. Frankie Heyle of Castleton. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from the Massanova Church at Rock Mills. Rev. Koy Peterson conducted the last rites with interment in the church cemetery.

Home on furlough, A/2c William Ramey told his wife and family of an incident occuring during an air assignment of transporting ammunition. A farm family narrowly escaped injury when a case of ammunition jettisoned from the airplane through the roof of their farm home one mile south and two miles east of De Land, Fla. The accident occured when a dead engine crippled the air force C-47 and the pilot ordered the ammunition jettisoned in an attempt to keep the plane aloft. The box of explosives crashed through the two-story house from roof to basement and enroute passed within three feet of the woman who was washing dishes in the kitchen. Only a few minutes .before four children had ibeen playing in the now demolished bed room on the second floor. Luckily they had vacated the room and were playing safely in the yard. William L. Ramey, according to the clippings telling of the accident, was crew chief on the plane.
