Ted Dalton as Republican candidate for Governor, had one of the best chances to poll a tremendous Republican vote, if not to win the election, that any previous Republican gubernatorial candidate has ever enjoyed. He is a forceful speaker, an experienced legislator, and he enjoys a wide acquaintance in the State. Tom Stanley, his Democratic opponent, a man of unusual ability and the highest integrity, was faced with the threat of a party split and his campaign manager was indicted on an income-tax charge. Ordinarily these things might have improved ^Mr^ Dalton’s chance of election. Certainly they were nofTntended to— brighten his opponent’s prospects.
But the Radford Republican has probably lost a lot of votes as a result of a queer assortment of political issues on whTchThe has-seen fi t - to— wage his campaign. It is doubtful whether any gubernatorial candidate, either Republican or Democratic could win an election on some of these issues. We do not know who his campaign advisers are, but whoever they are, they are either not practical politicians or they are obsessed with the idea that novelty can win an election over soundness of policy. Virginians as a whole are not inclined to favor such revolutionary changes as Mr. Dalton proposes and they are not widely dissatisfied with their present government.
