Critical Contrast

I recently had occasion to visit both the Flint Hill and the Sperryville Elementary Schools. One, with a spacy downstairs auditorium aforded abundant room and convenient exits for the school children; the other contrasted sharply with a small upstairs auditorium, doubling in the day as a class room as well as general activity room.. The two exits lead to steep stairs ascending into a cubbyhole hall and hence to the front hall leading out&de. As I decended the stairs, slowly, due to the pressing crowd, and came to a halt in the hall into which both streams of traffic empty, the horror of the situation struck me. Double this crowd by two, add the excitement of frightened children and you picture the havoc a fire would reap under these conditions.

I neither reprove Flint Hill school. nor do I praise Sperryville school. I merely remind the citizens of Rappahannock County of ^—danger everpresent in their midst. It is the responsibility of we who are older to protect these, our youths.
