occupy a position on the right flank of the outpost, then occupied by friendly troops. When he arrived at the friendly position, he found that it had- been overrun by the enemy and that only a few friendly troops remained, the others having been mortally wounded , or rendered casualties. He immediately led his men to the position and engaged the enemy in hand-to-hand combat and was successful in driving them from the position. Although Sergeant Reid_ was wounded during the action, he refused to leave the position^ He quickly reorganized his men, assisted in the evacuation of the wounded and resupply of ammunition. Despite his wound and intense artillery, mortar and small arms fire, he remained in the impact area throughout the remainder of the night. He constantly checked his men, offered them encouragement insured that they were in the most advantageous positions— and kept them supplied with ammunition. Sergeant Reid's outstanding gallantry and devoton to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
