Farm Woodlands
Last year District 3 of the Vir- . gioia Forest. Service received 446 requests for woodland management assistance from landowners residing within the distrto’s 16 county area. Foresters assisted 437 owners making timberland examinations on 37,868 acres of woodland. 20,228,000 hoard feet of timber was marked and estimated for harvesting by the ^Virginia Forest Service with a stumpage value in excess of $505,700. Growing timber in Virginia is good business.
The Virginia Forest Service, through its timber management program, provides forestry assistance to the individual landowner so that his timberlands may be managed to produce the greatest volume of timber of the best " species possible in the shortest period of time. At a landowner’s request, a trained forester will make a preliminary'examination of an owner’s timber holdings, advise him on the correct methods of managing it and submit a detailed report, together with decommenda* tions on his findings. This is free, there is no charge for a timberland examination.
In the event that mature timber exists on the tract, the Virginia Forest Service will mark and estimate the trees ready for harvesting. A fee of 60c per thousand board ft. ’for sawtimber marked and 15c per, standard cord for pulpwood marked is charged for this service. On completion of the marking work, the owner receives a report showing the number of trees marked by species and the volume of timber marked for cutting on the area.
