As we walked over the rolling hills on the farm recently purchased, George called attention to the old corn rows running up and down hill, and the gullies between each row. “This all took place in 1953, a year with less than average rainfall,” said George. What would have happened for family and iarm use, all because not enough water was stored in the soil. Needless to say, a deep soil in a high state of fertility will hold many times more water than an eroded, shallow low producing soil.
The soil, water, pasture and forest resources of the U. S. are the foundation blocks in the
structure of n&tional^economy. From that base comes our food, most of our clothing, paper and other fiber, ^and much of our shelter.
How well we protect and improve these resources in the years ahead will have a direct bearing on our standard of living in the towns and cities as well as on the farms. Your local Soil Conservation District can assist you with many of your conservation problems.
Fuiile social and civic activities have a powerful attraction for confused pepole who have a knawing desire to feel important.
