National Foundation appropriated $5,500,000 for 5,000,000 ccs. of GG, blood fractionating equipment and needles and other supplies used in mass GG inoculations.

“Thus in the two-year period, 19531954,” Mr. Barrows said, “the National Foundation will have allocated $24,500,000 for 20,000,000 ccs. of gamma globulin and attendant expenses."

The effectiveness of GG against polio was first established by National Foundation research tests in 1951 and 1952. It was actually used in combating polio for the first time this year. Becausfe of its scarcity, all allocations of GG in 1953 were placed under the control of the ODM.

The ODM apportioned GG for household contacts of diagnosed polio cases and for mass injections of 235,000 children in 22 epidemic areas.

Final results on GG’s performance t in 1953 have not yet been completed, but preliminary reports from health officers who used it for. mass inoculations have been encouraging.
