lrger in 1953^ the total acreage of forest land burned decreased from 4,690 acres, in 1952 to 1,563 acres in 1953. Wilfong stated that this was remarkable due to the Severe drought condition which existed for the last half of 1953.
Over 150 of the total fires in 1953were reported during the months of July, August, September and October. This is very unusual, Wilfong stated, as in a normal fire year there are rarely over 15 fires during these months.
In the sixteen-county, Albemarle County has the greatest number of fires, with 55, followed by Spotsylvania, with 36, and Fairfax reporing 32. Three-hundred an sid xacres were lost in Nelson county, followed !by Culpeper with 220 acres burned over, nd 215 in Spotsylvania. In 1952 in Nelson and Fluvanna counties over 1,200 acres were burned by single fires.
During 1953 it was necessary to man the Forest Service lookout,, towers forty days more than in a normal fire year.
Wilfong estimated the total loss fro mmroest fires, buildings, stock, game, soil and forests in his* district to be approximately $100,000.
