More Gamma Globulin
Plans for tripling the amount of gamma globulin available to the public for fighting polio in 1954 are being pushed by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis “despite the encouragement of recent vaccine developments,’' it was announced today by Raymond H. Barrows, executive director.
“No vaccine can be made available to the general public until, its effectiveness has been proven ip trials we will begin next February,” Mr. Barrows said. “The results of the trials will not be known until after the 1954 polio season.
“This means that gamtna globulin, the human blood derivative that provides a degree of temporary protection against paralytic polio, is our only present weapon against infantile paralysis.”
Mr. Barrows said the National Foundation would turn over 15,000,000 ccs. of GG to the Office of Defense Mobilization for use next year at a cost of $79,000,000 in March of Dimes funds. In 1953, he added, the
