The directors* program is on a voluntary basis. Growers either join or not, as thpy wish. The fee is 2c per bushel on all apples sold from the grower’s orchard, packed or in bulk. The 2c fee, notes Secretary-Manager C. R. Miller of Appalachian, is about equal to the fee when the organization started 18 years ago, of lc per bushel, Utility and better grades. The 1936 dollar is now worth about 52 cents, and Appalachian’s work has been curtailed according*'

The $100,000 means a signup of 5,000,000 bushels, or about one-fourth of the Belt’s 21,000-,' 000- bushel average crop. But the directors expect well above the 5-million minimum: hope to have half The Belt’s tonnage in shortly, or 10 million bushels to yield $200 000 for the market-building work. In West Virginia, where the campaign got off to an early start, signed pledges’for 1,295,000 bus. - have already been received, with more coming. All pledges are contingent on reaching the $100,000miqimum.
