United Nations plane along with the “big shots” and freight. There is no airport at Gaza—only a field. It rained that morning but not enough to prevent us from landing. The Gaza strip is mostly sand and it was packed frrmly. The little jeep that I had read about was on the job and had chased all of the sheep and goats from the field so that we could land. I did not see many flocks there and it seemed that the women and children were keeping watch over them.
The small Gaza strip is the only part of Palestine that actually remains. As it is a military zone I was rather limited as to picturetaking especially. The hospital compound is lovely and was very colorful with the vegetable gardens as Mrs. M-Rae has so aptly expressed it. The small amount of tillable land was being plowed by donkeys, horses, oxen, camels, and once we saw a donkey-camel team. Camels were numerous «nd they were using them for most everything.
Through the efforts ot the U. N., eucaloptus trees have been planted to hold the shifting sands. Also every one of the some 260,000 refugees have some kind of permanent housing this winter as compared to the previous tents. It is a bit warmer in Gaza than in Beirut.
