Oak Grove First Defeat Of Season
The Rappahannock Chiefs cost Oak Grove their first loss of the season when they swept to a 10-3 win over them Sunday -on the Grovers’ diamond. , What started out to be a nip and tuck battle between the league leaders turned into aa easy victory for the Chiefs as Junior Hawkins held the Grovers to 8 hits and handed them 7 strike outs, and ^ Newbill Miller homered in the seventh with the bases loaded. The Chiefs, unable to get more than a single for the first 4 innings, suddenly came to life in the fcfth. Buck Clater and Edwin • Scroggins doubled to bring across 2 runs. Oak Grove came back to score 1 run but Rappahannock advanced their lead in the seventh by driving in 6 runs. B. Clater and E. Scroggins singled and Pullen walked. N. Settle and C. Dodson followed with singles. R. Menefee was safe on an error. Newbill Miller then hit his tremendous homer over the left field fence and the runs poured in as the Grovers lost heart.
In their frame of the seventh, they attempted a rally, but with the help of relief pitcher Ned Settle, the Chiefs ^put out the fire, after the Grovers had added only 2 runs. -Two final runs were scored in the eighth with George Pullen responsible Tor the scoring hit, a triple.
Charles Dodson and Buck Clater led at bat for the Chiefs ' getting 3 for 5 and 3 for 6 respec, tively. H. Dyke, D. Dyke, and D. Bauserman led for the Grovers with 3 for 3, 2 for 3, and 3 for 5, respectively.
