This year, Miss* Fannie Hilton is commemorating 36 years in the telephone business. She has risen from that time from operator to agent—in her home where she manages the duties of an Agent.
Thirty-six years ago, says Miss Hilton, the operator’s task was quite different. The automatic dial system for local calls was nonexistent and the switchboard operator was required to ask “Number Please?’ and complete every call, no matter how short the distance between parties.
