apple tree population increased by 14,000 trees from 1940 to 1950, the bearing tree population . decreased 52,000 trees, Since this time orchardi.sts such as Lewis Turner, Ned Johnson, Henry Wood, Col. Earl Holmes, J. W. Fletcher, R. V. Snead, H. B. Wood, T. V. Williams and Lucio Kilby have either made or plan to make new plantings, however, in spite of the alertness of these men our apple tree population is dropping alarmingly fast. Looks like a good investment to me where soils and sites are favorable.
The cattle population other than milk cows has increased, approximately 3000 head since 1950 to an all time high of 12,100 head. The milk cow population has remained the same at 3200 since 1950 while the stock sheep and lamb population has increased to 3450 head the highest it’s been since 1948. Dur* ing the depression in the early 30’s %>ur sheep population ranged from 6300 to 6700 head. From 1939 to 1949 the alfalfa acreage increased from 53 acres to an all time high of 748 acres. While there was but 8 acres more devoted to alfalfa production in 49 than in 44 the total yield was more than doubled.
