It should be kept in mind that not all of the roads with U. S. route numbers are part of the National Intestate System This system consists of approximately 40, 000 miles of highways which, in the words, of the Bureau of Public Roads, are “of greatest signifiTjcance to the economic welfare and •defense of the Nation.”.
In the 7th Congressional District of Virginia, the plan of the National Interstate System calls for roads built to Federal standards along the general routes of the Valley Pike (U. S. II); U. S. 250 east of Staunton; U. S. 60 west of Lexington, and State Route 55 east of Strasburg. Most of the routes to be designated in the National Interstate System were selected in 1947 after a long series " of conferences of State and Federal highway planners. The remaining designations, comprising approximately 2,300 miles of roads in and around big cities, were .made in 1955.
The idea of a 90-per-cent Federal “contribution” is to have thdse 40.000 miles of major highways modernized as soon as possible. Needless to say, highway users, through gasoline and other automotive taxes, will have to pay'
