On the Chicago market last week,heavy prime steers were holding their own, while lighter weights/ 1100 pounds down, were slow and 50c to $1.50 lower, some as much as $3 under the recent high.
Last week’s receipts on -the 12 major markets were down 5% from the preceding week. In Virginia, there was an unfilled demand for choice grade.
The fed cattle market looks encouraging to at least about the first of the year, with prices expected to be generally beter than last year. As we said before, if you have hay or corn available, and plan to feed, feed good quality animals.
Graded feeders will be available during September and October at the Virginia Feeder Cattle sales.
VEAL
Now is the time for veal prices to be moving upward, but you can expect fluctuations all along.
Prices went lower last week, averagng 35c down. Choice and prime were $23 to $26 good. $20 to $24.
HOGS
Hog prices will probably hold their own through the week, but week was $1.5$. 5c lower than the seasonal decline.
Receipts were up 3% last weekover the preceding week, but still 7% lebow a year ago.
For week of the 18th, inspected slaughter dropped 1%, dipping under the year ago figure for the first time in more than a year.
Virginia auctions were 10c higher at $17.60; Richmond yards.
