LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor, Congratulations on the newspaper’s tenth birthday. I suppose you’d say I was present when the baby’s bottom was spanked.
In remembering Vol. I, No. I: that first issue of Rappahannock News was a dilly, all right! Jack Barber, my brother and I put in many long hour’s work—and loved it. Any fanner in Rappahannock understands when the statement is made: sure it was hard work, but rewarding. We worked hard and we were happy. We had, in superabundance, the good wishes and encouragement of the people of the county. They found that people need a newspaper, whether to speak for them, with them, or some times against them; nevertheless, the paper should be there.
As long as a newspaper remembers that its sole purpose is to serve the community, it justifies its existence and the printer can earn his living just as any other public servant.
I shall always be interested in Rappahannock and its newspaper. Please accept this as a sincere wish for many years of good living, health and happiness and many happy returns of the birthday.
