4-H Accomplishments
' During the last ten years, Rappahannockans have seen an increase of 4-H participation from less than .200 club members, both boys and girls, to 295 club members enrolled this year. A larger increase of boys attending club meetings has been noticed in .this time, with less than seventy club members enrolled in 1949, to well over one hundred and forty boys now enrolled.
The constant winnings of the Updike Brothers and Jack Sisk at out-of-county 4-H events has been the needed incentive for other boys in the county to take pride in their projects and exhibit them at these same shows and sales. This year new comers to the “show circuit” included Harrison Powers, John O’Ban non, Milton Gore, Billy Sisk and Anna Catherine Sites. One new hog show and sale, held in Front Royal last August, was added to the list of 4-H shows. A local “Baby Beef show will be held next May in Front Royal, with three Rappahannock 4-H’ers ensigning their baby beeves to the War ren-Page-Rappahan nock Baby Beef Show and Sale.
Many outstanding achievements and honors have been won over the past ten year period which certainly bears mentioning: In 1954 Newbill Miller was selected by the State 4-H Cldb Dept, to be one of the two Virginia Club Members representing the state at the North Carolina 4-H Short Course. Newbill was elected, also the same year, to the office of First VicePresident of the 1954 Virginia 4-H Short Course, an honor which very few club members in their 4-H careers achieve.
