Citizens of Rappahannock have always been proud of their main highways and secondary roads, and justly so. Bus drivers from other areas have been most complimentary. Said one, "When we have had a bad snow storm, I am always relieved when 1 reach the Rappahannock County line. I sometimes wonder just how they manage to clear the roads so quickly.”
News of the work of the Styte Highway Department, often referred to as "the most efficient department of the State Government” is always of great interest to the people of Rappahannock.
The Rappahannock News, celebrating its tenth anniversary this month (November) is happy to have such a wonderful report of road work in the past ten yean in our county.
Ten (10) miles of new road have been added to the system. These roads have been graded, drained and stabilized with crushed stohe. Ei#hy-Jfive'(*5) •b t'i d g e s have beat rebuilt, repaired and strengthened. Forty (40) miles have been 1 graded* drained, stabilized with •mritfedand surface treated. ! 3.5 miles of 3-lane (truck climbing lane) on Route 211 going up the mountain to Panorama have been constructed and eleven (11) miles of road resurfaced with bituminous plant rai*. New headquarters for Rappahannock were built in 1956.
