Plans are going well for the 35rh running of the Virginia Gold Cup on Saturday,May 7th at Warrenton, Virginia. While this renewal of the Gold Cup is the feature of the afternoon’s card, there will also be two events over brush, two over hgrdles and one on the flat, thus presenting a diversified program. j
Each renewal of the Gold Cup has been ofj considerable interest but this season’s race promises to present an outstanding field of starters. The Gold Cup timber course is a permanent one on Broadview Farm, owned by William E. Schlusemeyer. However,to date Mr. Schlusemeyer has never had an entry in this prominent Virginia event. Earlier this year he purchased Mainstay, a bay gelding by Peterski j(a former winner of The Maryland Hunt Cup) and out of Skysail, by Donnacona. Last season 1 Mainstay won My Lady’s Manor at Monkton, Maryland, and the Grand National at Butler, Md., then finished second in The Maryland Hunt Cup. He was bred by S. S. Janney, Jr. who is well versed in timber races, having won Thg Maryland Hunt Cup three times on his Winton.
Not only tjvill Mr. Schlusemeyer have Mainstay as a starter in this year’s Virginia Gold Cup but he has just purchased the acknowledged champion point-to-point horse, Logistics. Urtdefeated in two years’ of point-to-points, this bay geldng was owned and ridden by Col. B. deNadaillac and the now 7-yearold was registered with die Jockey Club as |Air W. (by Air Co
