One of the most interesting projects in the study is in progress at Ottawa, 111., where trucks and other vehicles of various sizes are driven night and day, in all types of weather, over an espeeially-built road loop, including differing, thicknesses and types of pavement. Continuous instrument tests measure the abilities of the differing surfaces to withstand the punishment of conveyances of differing weights and wheel numbers. While this data will be useful in highway tax planning, it also will be of use to design engineers in deciding on the proper specification for future highway construction.
