DOINGS
Rappahannock 4-H members were given their final examinations in Tractor Maintenance and competed in the driving contest at Herbert Barksdale’s farm at Flint Hill Saturday. April 2.
Those competing in Unit A were Mark Harris, Billy Sisk, and Harrison Powers. This phase of the project covered: Tractor Safety, What Makes An Engine Run, General Lubrication, Oil for the Engine, Clean Air, Mixing Fuel and Air, Ignition and Cooling Systems.
The final examination included 20 true or false questions, 15 multiple choice questions and 15 completion questions covering the above topics which were covered in a series of five meetings.
Mark Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harris of Huntly, placed first, winning ^ 10 in. adjustable wrench. Billy Sisk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sisk of Sperm ille, placed second winning vice grip pliers. Louie Miller, Charles Dodson, Netus Dodson, and Lindy Atkins. A similar ripe examination was given this group covering: Ignition System, Saving Fuel, Valves and Valve Service, Steering and Front Wheels. Power Transmission, Care of Tires, Trouble Shooting and Winter Care.
Louie Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Miller of Flint Hill placed first winning 5 qts .of oil donated through the' courtesy of Hampton Service Station. Charles Dodson of Sperryville, won second prize, a heir cut and tonic donated by Watts Barber Shop,
Project instructors included Messers Raymond and Eddie Sutphin, Walter Russell, Walter B. Kilby and Donald Gore to whom we are most grateful. Sutphin’s Custom Service and H. S. Barksdale graciously furnished tractors and equipment for instruction and driving.
The tractor driving contest was a true measure of driving skill: penalties were as follows: Unnecessary change of direction 10 paints; Markers or lines touched 40 points; Stakes knocked over or lines crossed 50 points; Tractor engine stalled 10 points; grated gears 10 points; riding clutch 10 points; Measurements in the shed: inches off center at front 20 points; at rear 20 points; inches from back wall greater than 1, 10 points;
