Questions About
Social Security
Tlicse are questions and answers commonly asked about social security.
Question: What is “a quarter of coverage”?
Answer: It is, generally, a calendar quarter of work. Of course, a calendar quarter is a 3-month period beginning January 1, April 1, July 1 or October 1 of any year.
In most kinds of employment you get 1 “quarter of coverage” for each calendar quarter in which you have made $50 or more in wages. (A self employed person who has net earnings of $400 or more in a year gets 4 quarters of coverage for that year. A farm worker gets 1 quarter of coverage to each $100 cash wages, covered by the law, paid to him in a year).
Question: Suppose I get disabled and unable to work, but have not yet reached retirement age?
Answer: The law will protect your benefit rights by “freezing” your earnings record if you are disabled from working, and if your disability is expected to be of “long continued and indefinite duration”
and if you have met the necessary work requirements.
