Another important factor to consider is that in spite of our marvelous advances in plant food chemistry and in the production of various soil conditioners, it takes thousands of years to build even a thin, layer of lifesupporting topsoil. That's right, it takes many years to build even one inch of topsoil yet all this good work of nature can be destroyed by a man in a relatively few years by careless land management.
All educational media, the Soil Conservation Service, the ASC's Agricultural Conservation Program, the Agricultural Extension Service, the Vo-ag teachers and others have for many years now, been doing everything possible to encourage farmers to conserve the soil to prevent its deterioration or loss through erosion. In spite of all of this, our layer of topsoil has steadily been disappearing through the years. To be continued in a later issue
