Drive Witty Caution
With some 800,000 children in Virginia returning to school early this month. Dr. W. W. Wilkerfon. Superintendent of Public Instruction and member of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, has asked;drivers to watch for them and to give them the right of way at all itimes. even though they may disobey traffic rules.
“We must: face the fact that children sometimes fail to stop and think when exposed to traffic,” he said, “which islalhthe more reason that we drivers' must attempt to do some of their thinking for them.” At the same time, he asked parents to outline clearly the dangers of traffic to their; youngsters as they apply to those «foqt, riding bicycles and using school buses.
In the last connection, Dr. Wilkerson stressed! the Virginia lavv requiring motorists to come to a full stop when meeting, overtaking or approaching from any direction a school bus which has halted to take on or discharge passengers. “The law requires more than a stop,” ihe continued, “since the motorist must; remain halted until the bus is again in motion and the road clear of children.
