Raymond L. Wimbish, Supervisor of School Transportation, commented, “This law and the observance motorists have given it undoubtedly made it possible for us to operate a fleet of approximately 4,700 buses for more than four years without a fatality incidental to boarding or leaving a school bus, despite more than 60 million road crossings annually by some 400,000 school children.”
Dr. Wilkerson noted that last year Virginia saw 87 young people 15 years of age or younger killed and 4.359 injured in traffic crashes. “While all of these tragedies did not occur in connection with school activities,” he observed, “they give a good indication as to the extreme vulnerability of children in traffic.”
Concluding, Dr. Wilkerson asked drivers to be cautious when approaching groups of children waiting at roadsides for buses, to be alert in the vicinities of school and to make every allowance for childish actions which can result in a lifetime of remorse for a driver and a drastically shortened lifetime for a child.
