I crawled from a nice warm bed at 3 a.m. Monday morning to get ready to go to Culpeper with Lee “Thornton who drove Mr. Rodes Brown of Sperryville and myself to the railroad station where we joined a group from Culpeper and a group from Madison to board a train for Washington, D. C. I must admit it was my first train ride . except for the rides I took years ago on the Washington and Old Dominion (Old Dilapidated, we used to call it) which ran from Bluemont to Rosslyn. It was sort of a Tooiverville Trolly.
On our arrival there, we immediately boarded the “Victory Train” to join Democratic Vice Presidental nominee, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird Johnson on the first lap of their whistle-stop tour through the south. I was very favorably impressed with the Senator. I also enjoyed meeting Governor Buford Ellington of Tennessee.
