Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, nominee for rice president on the Democratic ticket, arrived in Culpeper early Monday morning an the-first leg of a whistle-stop tour through the South. From the rear platform of'the eleven-car LBJ special. Senator Johnson said, "For eight years the South has been used as a golf course to tee off from.” The crowd, estimated at between 1500 and 2500, icsponded to J]is declaration that a Kennedy-Johnson administration would be for all Americans, regardless of race, color or creed.
Local leaders of the Democratic party from Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock and newsmen from the vicinity accompanied ‘Senator^ Johnson- from Washington to Culpeper aboard the special. From Rappahannock were J. Rodes Brown, Sperryville and Mrs. Sarah Latham, Editor of the Rappahannock News.
Also aboard the “Victory Train” were Lady Bird Johnson and Govarnor Fuford Ellington of Tenn. Governor Almond joined the party in Orange where he introduced Johnson to the crowd awaiting him there.
