All too frequently, I hear people complain of high taxes. Politicians promise to lower them. Comedians make jokes about them. And editorial writers, when pressed for time or subject, readily take refuge behind some cant on the same. Like a two-headed coin, however, there is another side, and we wonder if the reader has ever paused to consider the many advantages of high taxes- It would, I am sure, surprise most of us. Let us consider a fewOne
of the saddest sights in the world is a picture of a spendthrift son or daughter, dissipating the hard earned fortune accumulated by an aggressive industrious father. Take, Tor example, Tommy Manville or Barbara Hutton, and so on. Happily, this will be a thing of the past. If the trend of inheritance taxes continues, it will be impossible for any one to inherit a sizable amount of money, and this disgraceful type of exhibition will be no more.
Another remedial effect of taxes will be recognized in the rise in life expectancy- Daily the obituary columns report the death of a promising young banker at 47 or a rising young merchant at 48- Heart attacks from the strain and pressure of competition have and continue to slaughter our businessmen in their 50’s. As income taxes climb and the cost of living climbs with them, incentive to work for the disappearing dollar will diminish. Then our b si brains will stop killing themselves for something the go .. Many more favorable things can be said about high taxesThey cut down unemployment by providing jobs for millions of bureaucrats otherwise unemployable. They perpetuate quaint, archaic businesses like the manufacture of butter, that might otherwise die out- They insure the intelligence of our future generations bv developing competition against them overseas under our program for developing technical progress in foreign countries.
By now it should be obvious that the advantages of high taxes are manifold, though often quite subtle. Perhaps the few examples pointed out w’ill provoke r flection by the individual reader and I am sure many more can be enumerated. In closing, I would like to mention one additional benefit that occurred to me.
The chief criticism of our modern society is that we have lost our individuality in this age of mass production. We are too average. But through high taxation we can provide for such extraordinary things as air conditioned dog houses in the Department of Agriculture at $3,00.00 per dog, and super-modem cow stalls at $5,800.00 per cow- Now what could be as bizarre and unusual as this?
