CATTLE
Slaughter cattle prices probably will lose the dollar or so they have gained in the past few weeks, but then they should level out and hold until about the first of the year.
Prices of both slaughter and feeder and Stocker cattle have been easing up from $2 under last year to about $1 under, but during the next few weeks they will probably ease back.
The number of cattle on feed to come to market between now and the first of the year will be a little below a year ago, but grass fed slaughter cattle moving to market will be enough to hold beef supplies up to or above a year earlier, however, lower hog slaughter figures will keep red meat supplies pretty well in line with demand, up substantially.
If you have slaughter cattle to sell, it will pay to hold them for a better finish.
Good grade steers at Virginia auction last week were bringing $21.50 to $23.75, with standard grade at $19 to $21.50. Choice and prime steers in Chicago brought $25.25 to $27.25, with good grade at $24 to $25.
