A panel of outstanding newsmen, highway offifcials and Legislators determined that the best way to develop our highway systems was to keep the public informed. To develop an "awareness” among all the people and ask them to “do somehing about it.”
Said a delegate, “We have the men.the equipment.—the material-'.we can get the money of there i- a proper public awarenes-.
1. AWARENESS that traffic congestion is not a necessary evil. not an inescapable heritage of modern living.
2. AWARENESS that there are ready answers to most of our highway needs that can provide without undue drains upon our tax sources or on our national economy.
3. AWARENESS that the dreadful accident toll can be materially reduced through improved highway design.
4. Awareness that adequate roads don’t cost.they pay.
“Creating such an awareness among 180,000,(XX) people, combating misinformation, inertia mistrust, reaction..isn’t easy'. but it can, and must be done.
“The voice of a single citizen may not carry far, but the voice of citizens in concert carries power, that forces action.”
