The camel is, a reast to the Western mind, the most exotic and the most romantic of all modes of transportation used by man. Trained as a beast of burden from very early times and celebrated in a host of drawings, paintings and sculptures from antiquity to the present, the camel has always fascinated he observer and has always been a precious possession of his owner.
It was the custom during the Tang era (61.8-906 A.I).) in China to furnish the tombs of the more important people with terra cotta images of those possessions which might be considered essential to their happiness in the after life. ()f the representations of the .animal-kingdom found in the T'ang tombs, that of the horse is the most frequent, but other animals and sometimes domestic birds are also discovered in the tomjrs.
