This office daily receives a number of srfil test resjults for which I am expected to write fertilizer and lime recommendations. This, I am glad to do, however I must remind farmers that for me to do so not knowing the soil type he is dealing with puts me at a disadvantage and could mean wasteful spending of his money.

For instance let’s assume the soil test shows a PH of 0.0 If in this case soil type is Congaree fine sandy loam, 2 tons of limestone will do the job; if the soil is Brandywine loam, 3 tons are recommended ; and should the soil be a clay loam, 6 tons will be needed to sweeten the soil to the same level.

Fertilizer recommendations are not as closely governed by soil type as are those for lime, however fertilization rates are governed considerably by the soil ty pe. One soil has the ability to hold improvement while rainfall or snow may cause much of the added fertility to reach be&nv the root zone and as a result it is lost.

Both the County Agent's office and the ASC office each has a complete set of soil survey maps. You should personally bring your soil samples to either of these offfices and at the time check with me or Milton Gore so the soil types can be entered on the soil rest record sheet for each field a soil test is to be run on.
