Weekly Farm Price
Outlook
'HOGS
Hog prices are due to turn the corner in the next two or three weeks aitd start up again toward a seasonal. peak in June or early JulyPrices
have been easing down since about the first week in February, until now they are about a dollar or so above a year ago, or just about where they ought to be based on supplies.
Pork shortages are quite low compared to a year ago, and there is optimism in the trade for higher farm prices. When the spring seasonal peak in slaughter passes in the next few weeks, prices should start seasonally up, but the gain to mid-summer will be moderate.
For the longer pull, it looks as ' if prices will be pretty good for the rest of the year. Most experts are predicting hogs will average about $16 by late fall which would not be as good as in late 1960.
Producers in the 10 Midwest com states say they plan to farrow eight per cent more sows in the March-May period and five per cent more in the June-August period. If they don’t exceed these figures, hog prices ought to be pretty fair.
