figures just released by the Vir-, giuia Division of Forestry show that an increasing number of timber. owners are taking advantage of the Division’s forest management assistance program. During the period from July 1, 1960 to June 30, 1961, six hundred seventy-eight landowners in the sixteen county northern district, requested and received assistance under this program. This is a 220 percent increase over the same period, ten years ago. . .-■ r. % *.
Foresters in the district, examined over thirty-nine thousand acres of timberland during the year and wrote management plans and recommendations based on their findings. Based on their recommendations and at the request of the landowners, nine million board feet of sawtimber and twenty five hundred cords of pulpwoodi were selectively marked for cutting. In addition, over two thousand seed trees were marked on land from which timber was to be cut. The estimated gross return to landowners for this timber which was cut under good forestry practice, is three hundred thousand dollars.
