A majorette group, “The Stepettes,” of Marshall was first in that class and top prize for bands in the parade went to Charles Town, W. Va. High School. Rappahannock Rescue Squad, Washington, Va. took first among rescue units. Luray Drum and Bugle Corps were top in their group.
OWL Marching Unit was awarded first in that class; Lillian Grigsby, “Miss Castleton”, was named visiting, Honorary Fire Chief; Smokey the Bear was best appearing float; The Cub Pack 196 from Culpeper was first in this group and the skating clown was Gene Green from Leesburg who won in the comic entries.
The parade was led by Sperryville Boy Scout Troop.
Miss Bonnie Brown, 'daughter* of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brown of Sperryville, was crowned queen on Friday night by Miss Shirley Brown, outgoing queen. The ’61 queen was given a bouquet of red roses and a $5 cash award by the fire company.
Miss Doris Ann Dodson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dodson, placed second with Miss Beverly Jean Atkins, daughter of Mr.'and Mrs. Elmer Atkins, winning third place. The runners -up were each given a carnation corsage.
