Increased use of dw forests by hunters brings an increase in the danger of forest fires. This is the comment of the persons responsible for the protection of woodlands in Virginia.

When dry weather coincides with hunting season, employees of the Division of Forestry prepare themselves for the worst. Some, times the worst doesn’t happen, but more frequently it does. This means that some person, or persons, who enjoys using the woods for pleasure, is also intent on destroying the very thing which he enjoys. Not intentionally perhaps, but carelessness by sportsmen can cause an undetermined amount of damage each year through destructive forest fires.

In the Northern Piedmont area, fires started by hunters sometimes account for as much as 20 to 25 percent of the total number of i fires in' a year. 'Each of these fires can destroy up to several thousand acres of forest land which is being used for valuable timber growth and recreation. Hunter carelessness involves such things as a hastily drowned campfire, a burning match, or a lighted cigarette. Ei'
