Aroused by the Kennedy Administration’s dire prediction of atomic attack and radio-active fallout, we sat down to discuss our plan of survival.
Fallout shelters, after all, are rather expensive to construct. But we have a cellar with thick rock walls that should be easy to convert into a shelter. There are only four windows, and these can be blocked off. The shelves are already there and all we have to do is store up enough food for five children and us for two weeks. Five children and us packed in a dark cellar for two weeks? I believe an atom bomb couldn’t be but so bad!
And so we thought about how bad the atom bomb could be. Assuming the Russians decided to embark on an atomic war, why would they throw just one atom bomb at us? They wouldn’t. They would throw every one they have. We have announced that we have enough atomic explo-, sives to demolish Russia. It is reasonably safe to assume Russia has as much if not more atomic explosives than we.
If they sent the first missile over, they not only would send all others they have, but missiles filled with nerve gasses that could blanket the entire area, and additional missiles filled with spinal menengitis and other bacteria. We should spend two weeks in a dark cellar with five children to come out to this?
No, we’ll adopt plan of survival number 13, which is to go on living as usual. John F. Kennedy will have to peddle his shelters elsewhere.
