Date for Referendum on 1963 Crop Wheat Marketing Quotas Set for August 30:

Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman today set Aug. 30 as the date for a referendoum on Wheat marketing quotas for the 1963 crop of wheat as provided by pre-1961 legislation.

“With winter wheat planting rear at hand, time will not permit any further delay in completing arrangement for the 1963 wheat program,” Secretary Freeman said.

“Any Congressional action this summer on new legislation will apparently come too late to be put fully in effect for next year’s wheat crop since farmers are at the time of year when their plans must be completed for 1963-crop winter wheat seedings.

“Rejection of long-range legislation by the House of Representatives in a close vote, coupled with unavoidable delays in the Senate, precludes adoption within the next few days of much needed major revisions in the wheat program. This leaves no alternative but to proceed on the basis of permanent legislation in effect before this
