(4) Crossbred heifers had 0.05 lbs. greater average daily gain on feed than straight breds.
(5) Crossbred and straightbred steers had about the same daily gain on feed but as yearlings the crossbreds were 43 lbs. heavier.
Thus it appears you cattlemen who are feeding out your calves or selling yearlings should consider cross-breeding. On the other hand if you are selling your calves as feeders you’d best stick to your straightbred as there is still buyer resistance at feeder calf sales as they (the buyers) are suspicious that the black markings on a white face calf may be from HolsteinHereford crosses or that the roan coloring may be from dairy blood.
