As a result of the recent press release from the State Department of Health on the treatment and prevention of insect bites, many requests have been received for additional information on this subject. Therefore, Dr. Mack 1. Shanholtz, State Health Commissioner, offers the following suggestions :
Local Treatment: Apply sodium bicarbonate, o r household amonia at the site of the sting; ice packs should be applied to the area of reaction.
Systemic Treatment: Systemic reactions to insect bites amount to a medical emergency, and each case should be treated with the utmost urgency. Such reactions are characterized by profuse reddening and swelling of the site bitten with extensive edema, or swelling, in the adjacent area. Also swelling bf the throat, pain, and shock is experienced by the victim in many instances.
A tourniquet should be applied close to the area BENEATH the stmg. In the event of shock the patient should be stretched out with head elevated, blankets placed over him so that he may be kept warm and the pulse checked constantly. Hospitalization is to be considered if at all possible in a severe case. In any event a physician should be summoned.
